When buying pet supplies, you may ask yourself, “Why buy Organic?” The answer lies with the materials and the by-products of the manufacturing process. Traditionally manufactured pet products are made with synthetic fibers. The companies that produce such products are polluting the environment greatly. Buying organic supplies will give you the peace of mind knowing that you are providing the very best for your pet. By utilizing organic products you will improve the quality of life and longevity of your pet.
These companies release millions of pounds of toxic chemicals into the air, water, and soil. This alone can cause your pet, and you, to be exposed to these poisons. The release of these chemicals also causes biodegradation in the soil and water, and the dangerous toxins are also carried into the troposphere, the lowest atmospheric layer, where they will remain, causing damage for long periods of time.
As if the deterioration of our environment isn't enough, the products that these companies produce are harmful to our pets as well. In 2007, there was a major recall on pet food when the FDA discovered that the wheat gluten used in the pet food was tainted with melamine. Melamine is a chemical substance used in plastic, and is thought to be used to make the pet food to appear to have more protein. Melamine is extremely harmful to animals because it causes the formation of crystals in the kidneys, which can progress to kidney failure. Many dogs and cats have died from eating food tainted with melamine.
Buying organic supplies will give you the peace of mind knowing that you are providing the very best for your pet. By utilizing organic products you will improve the quality of life and longevity of your pet. Also, many companies that produce organic pet products are environmentally conscious, using all natural materials throughout the manufacturing process. This gives you all the more reason to buy organic supplies for your pet.

During the holiday season we are all likely to be doing more cooking in the kitchen preparing for what may seem to be endless get-togethers. While it is great to unite with friends and family, this is also a time of year that many of us begin to put on weight. This is also true for our pets as well. Pets often are the recipients of endless scraps while their owners are preparing for their parties. While giving pets a treat may seem innocent enough, extra weight on a dog causes numerous issues including joint problems, heart disease, and a reduced lifespan. Of course our pets deserve a special Thanksgiving Dinner just like we all do. Just be more cognizant of all the other treats that are being given while preparing for that special meal.
Be sure to never allow your pet to eat any poultry bones without fail. All poultry bones easily splinter and can become lodged inside or perforate a dog’s intestines. Be certain to discard all bones after carving your turkey and place all bones in a tightly sealed bag. Be sure that the dog will not be able to gain access to the bag so that you can prevent a potential disaster from unnecessarily ruining your holiday plans on Thanksgiving day.
So, why should only humans get to have a special dinner on Thanksgiving? The answer is they shouldn’t! Don’t forget to treat your dog to a great meal as well. The recipe below is also a great way to utilize some of the leftovers in your refrigerator that you might become tired of looking at after a while. This is an easy to make recipe for Turkey Patties. Your dog is almost certain to come back “barking for more.”
Yields 2 Turkey Patties
Ingredients
1 Cup shredded roasted turkey meat
¼ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg, beaten
½ sweet potato-baked, skin discarded and potato coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons cranberry sauce
1. In a medium bowl, combine the turkey and the breadcrumbs. Mix gently with your hands, and then mix in the egg and sweet potato. Shape into two ½ inch thick patties.
2.In a medium skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add the patties and cook, turning once, until golden-brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a paper-towel lined plate to drain. Top with the cranberry sauce and let your canines enjoy! |

Every year, millions of dogs develop some form of arthritis. In fact, 1 out of 5 dogs currently suffer from this ailment. Despite the fact that arthritis, osteoarthritis in particular, effects mostly older and larger dogs, on average, by the time a dog is 5 years old they will need to be treated for some form of arthritis
While human skeletal structures are very different compared to that of dogs, human joints are constructed the same way as dogs. A joint is the meeting of two bones, and at this union there is smooth cartilage that wraps around the end of each bone. The cartilage has no nerve endings and acts like a cushion for the joints, preventing any pain from occurring when they move.
Also like humans, many dogs suffer from osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a condition that occurs when the cartilage that protects the joints deteriorates, leaving the bones exposed and touching. Unlike cartilage, bones do contain nerves and the rubbing of two bones at a joint creates a great deal of pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving.
So why do so many dog suffer from arthritis? Much of it has to do with their diet. The main source of protein for dogs is red meat, which contains a very high amount of uric acid. Uric acid causes a buildup of crystals around the joints, producing pain and becoming a major contributor to many arthritic conditions occurring in dogs.
Osteoarthritis is very painful and can greatly diminish the quality of life of your dog. They become sluggish and inactive, unwilling or unable to move as they once did, often exhibiting their pain with limping, slowness to get up after lying down, and not jumping as far as they once did. When the pain gets really bad, some dogs even lose their appetite, creating even more worrisome health problems.
The current treatment vets often use for dogs with osteoarthritis is to prescribe them NSAIDs. NSAIDs are medications such as Aleve and Motrin, which are suppose to relieve pain. This treatment is not a permanent cure and can do more harm than good. These medications can cause side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or yellowing of the gums or eyes. Long term use of these medications can cause damage to your dogs liver or kidneys.
